Curriculum Intent for Latin
Through the teaching of Latin at KS2, we aim to enrich children’s vocabulary and support them to develop a deeper understanding of grammatical structures. Learning Latin improves children’s literacy as it scaffolds language development and helps pupils make connections between Latin and English vocabulary and grammar, providing more opportunities for our children to develop and progress in their listening, speaking, and writing skills. In addition, we aim to provide children with a solid foundation for the study of language at secondary school level. Learning Latin equips children with cultural capital and provides purposeful links to other topics in the national curriculum to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.
Implementation
At Holy Cross, Latin is taught discretely throughout Key Stage 2. We use the Minimus scheme of work, implemented by Classics for All. Throughout a child’s time in KS2, pupils will complete chapters from the Minimus: Starting out in Latin book, completing a mix of vocabulary, grammar, storytelling and drama activities. Each year, children will focus on three chapters.
